Nightmare in Barceloña...

Blogdosts, I have really, really missed this space. Let me put it this way, Barceloña, gorgeous as it is, can be tough for anybody who does not speak Spanish. Here i am at the airport lounge after a battle at immigration. I am convinced there is something about my personality and attitude that sets me up for these crazy searches and questioning each time i am in Europe. But i managed to feast on Gaudi and Picasso and Miro.... reminding me poignantly of M.F.Husain´s tragic end in a strange country. Here in Spain, they honour their artists.... respect them. Streets are named after great cellists and painters. Look at how shabbily we treat our cultural icons. Have to rush to catch my flight home. More from me tomorrow. Adios.

It was a good move to stay quiet for few days to get some courage and energy back for defending a rascal who used to have a fragile ass !!

Get a life Ms De !! Looks like you get pleasure in defaming your own country. We do honor our artists but we certainly don't have to name streets ... Also in a country like ours where people struggle to get two square meals ..... we have better reasons to concentrate. It's not just about a bunch of people who hang million dollar paintings and host cocktail parties to crib about anything and everything.

Amuses me to see you mention Gaudi, Miro and MFH in the same breath. Well, I will give you an analogy-no matter how good a sharp shooter is, if he shoots an innocent person he is guilty. No matter how good an artist MFH is-he has painted my Shantadurga naked. UNFORGIVABLE!

I believe the best comment on this entire Hussain saga came years back, when the controversy first erupted. Writing in the Indian Express, Nandita Krishna, granddaughter of the late CPR Iyer, stated that "our sculptures in temples are nude is no excuse. These were temples crafted hundreds of years ago, defining a certain culture that existed centuries before, that is, before the Islamists arrived. Today, our women are fully clothed, and so do we worship our gods. Our main deities are fully clad, and it is now a standard-form of worship for devotees to offer sarees to the goddesses. Hussain cannot take shelter in the argument that the gods in our temples are not clothed. This is no longer true. Hinduism reflects change, and Hussain has to accept this, as he tacitly does, when he avoids painting his Prophet".Ms.De is conveniently side stepping the issue of the Danish cartoonist, haven't seen her supporting the cartoonist, may be out of fear for her life!!After all everyone fears for their life isn't it,Ms.De???

You are not alone. I was made to do all kinds of yoga in the Heathrow Airport that even baba Ramdev wouldn't've imagined by a lady because I carried a bottle of drinking water. I told her "Can't you see this is the water given by your British Airways ?" which fell into deaf ears. She seemed to enjoy this "pull up your hands. spread them" etc in front of all. Finally a man told me, "drink it" & let me go after I gulped it. The woman was alarmed, "Let her go ? you mean ?". She was sure I was Osama's sister.
While coming, in the Dallas airport, a hefty security guard took me away from the line & asked me, "Do you have anything in this bag that'd prick my fingers ?" I wanted to say, "Yes. There is a rattle snake inside" !
This time in the Heathow airport everybody except me were examined thoroughly. They smiled & said, "No check" to me. Maybe they got a wire from Dallas saying, "Though this lady looks very suspicious, there is no bomb in her bag" !

Barring exceptions, actually Indians invite trouble on most occasions than to fault immigration authorities at foreign airports.
Right from excess luggage that Indians cant do without, to getting impatient and restless standing and waiting in queues, to expecting a red carpet to be rolled out each time (especially the blingy bollywood kinds), speaking accent-rich English full of grammatical errors, spraying deos and perfumes on top of their sweaty, smelly selves, adding up to a lethal concoction of fragrance from a different world...oh the list goes on and on...If only people who complain comply with rules of the land where they travel, and treat travel as an act to be executed with some discipline can we expect incident-free air travel and fewer reasons to complain.

The irony is that I keep coming back to disagree with you Ms.De. That's probably why you don't, for a moment, think of all those who have an issue with glorifying a hypocrite. Then again, it is your blog and your space!
M.F most certainly took liberties with the most tolerant people. His own kind erased the liberal aspect of our culture long ago. He was unable to find beauty in many female representations from his own scriptures I see. It all comes from such a vast disconnect. He imagines that we view our deities the way the modern world views the Goddesses of ancient Greece or Rome. All those ladies who are myths in the world's eyes. Maybe he's ahead of the rest of the crowd and saw things (in addition to naked perspectives) that the rest of us cannot see. But for the present, Hindu deities are real. To us, in our hearts and minds. If he wants to exercise his rights, any Hindu who paints depictions of any other Godly figures of other religions should also have the same rights without the fear of losing his head. Hindus have been very kind to M.F.
Or lucky for M.F., they have no spine. It's easier to give up one's identity than be angry and think for a moment about what is staring us in the face, no Mrs.De?

I won't comment on whether he should have drawn naked pictures of Hindu deities or not but in a democracy as free speech is respected so is the right to protest. He should have stood trial and defended himself (all cases against him were eventually dismissed) instead of being a coward and leaving India. I have never seen a great person run away from what he believes to be true. Also there was no danger to his life in India, I believe we indians are capable enough to keep our artists safe from few idiotic extremists group.
