Baisakhi Greetings from Bangkok....

The countdown has begun. I am ready to fly home. Have promised not to go anywhere close to lemon grass for the next few months. I swear the entire country smells of lemon grass. Not a bad thing in itself.... but! Am feeling so cut off.... it was great to find Dhoni and Ratan Tata in the Wall Street Journal this morning. India has been generating good press, for a change. With key states in election mode, I'm sure we can expect SOME news that goes beyond cricket and the IPL.
Here in Bangkok, the city is officially shut for three days. The restaurants are empty - including The Long Table last night. But the shopping malls are overflowing. I don't know how the Thais do it, but the prices are shockingly low at say, the Platinum Mall, where it's possible to buy trendy cotton tunics for 300 rupees - I kid you not. Then of course, one sees those ghastly , glittering gowns so adored by our TV stars, who then grandly pass them off as designer wear when asked by equally ignorant fashion reporters. The fake markets are a world apart... and it's fun to see so many 'Ferangs' pouncing on 'solid gold' Rolexes studded with diamonds that cost 2,000 bucks!!
Aaaaah..... one more day to go. Then home. And daal chavaal! Bliss!

Oh I so agree on that.... the entire country smells of lemon grass... a lot of masaage parlors even use lemon grass oil! Once even my Thai Airways flight was smelling of lemongrass! Imagine my plight! I so wanted to jump out! This country seems to be facinated with lemongrass... next to the king! Although I can't stand anything that has lemongrass in it! On the contrary the hubster loves lemongrass! Hey bhagwan!
